One of the biggest lures to Luxembourg city is the UNESCO World Heritage sites within the city and so the next day – we got up bright and early to get a guided tour around the city and get a deeper look at the city’s long and glorious history!

Random aside: You can rent these bikes for free in Luxembourg as long as you return them to a docking station (of which there are loads of them all around the city) within 30 minutes. This is easily done by the way and lots of people cycle around the city. It also has dedicated cycle paths everywhere so you can get around quite quickly.

We started off at Gëlle Fra, the Monument of Remembrance – she’s an iconic part of Luxembourg and was set up as a remembrance of the Luxembourgers who volunteered during World War 1…

And kicked off with a walk around the city…

…before finally heading to the UNESCO World Heritage parts. The official Visit Luxembourg site has more details than you can shake a stick at so I won’t bore you by rehashing said details. I will however, walk you through it in photos… 😉

These caves are part of the city walls and was a hiding place for Luxembourgers during the war…

Finally, we made it back towards the city to check out Notre-Dame Cathedral. From the outside, it’s rather unassuming – there’s a lot of details to the entrance but asides that, it’s relatively ‘restrained’ especially compared to the gilded and elaborate facades of Cathedrals in Italy…. and then you step in and WOW!!! It’s so much bigger and so much more intricate inside.
