Nestled in between the gorgeous Mediterranean Sea and the dramatic mountains of Cévennes is Nimes, one of France’s prettiest little cities!

Of course, everyone has heard of the big hitting destinations of Paris, Lille and Cannes, but there’s so much more to this incredible country that doesn’t involve the most popular ports-of-call…

…case in point, with Nimes.

Over the last few years, we’ve visited Nimes twice and I can’t tell you how much I love it!

Before our first visit, I’d heard very little about the city and went out on a whim to discover an area of France that we’d never experienced before…

… and boy am I glad we did! After having the mot incredible first-time visit to Nimes, I managed to coerce a bunch of my friends to give in to my constant nagging to visit Nimes for a long weekend away.

None of the group had ever contemplated visited Nimes (and most hadn’t even heard of it)…

One of the things that I love most about Nimes is its history. Nimes was a pretty important Roman city, which means there’s shed loads of beautiful Roman artefacts and sites that are well worth a gander at.

The city has one of the best-preserved Roman Amphitheatres in the world! (Even better than the Colleseum in Rome).

Along with the last remaining (intact) Roman temple, the gorgeous Jardins and the iconic Roman aqueduct that fed the city with water.

Over the coming weeks I’m going to post quite a few more updates on Nimes but I was just too excited to share them all with you (hence the post now 🙂 ).

Take a look at how incredible the city is and our awesome Airbnb below, which was a local architect’s house.

It was such a cool place… even having its own rooftop pool!

Nimes is fast become one of my favourite French cities!

  • Taste of France

We drove through, planning a pitstop, only to find ourselves stuck in feria congestion. So we gave into the situation and decided to eat. But so did the other zillion people in town for the feria, and tables were hard to come by. We finally stopped at a tiny (I do mean tiny) café with a menu out front. But inside, the entire place was full of cartons of wine for the revelry later that night. The owner told us not to worry, cleared boxes off a little table and set two places. There was one other person eating, on half a table (the other part of his table was still piled high). I still dream about the lemon chicken I had. But this isn’t limited to Nîmes–you can walk into almost any little dive in France and be served amazing food.

Ahhh, that’s so lovely! I love it when things fall into place like this. I swear, we’ve only eaten amazing food in smaller towns in France… and the warmth that owners offer always makes the food taste even nicer (if that makes sense)!

So happy to hear about your experience too. We’ve fallen in love with Nimes and can’t wait to head back. Kinda want to make this a yearly trip now.
