Okay it wasn’t right across all of Croatia but it was for over 40km (about 25 miles) and seeing as this was out first time doing on quad bikes, I think it’s safe to say it was quite a big deal for both of us. To be fair though, this was one of the things I was looking forward to the most on our itinerary!
Quad biking in the Croatian mountains is as epic as it sounds. I did, however, get quite a lot of mud of me and although initially I was trying to be careful not to get any more on myself, I soon realised it was a futile effort and embraced it.
I think at one stage it almost seemed like I was driving through pools of water just to see how dirty I could get the quad bike (I wasn’t really – I didn’t bring that many jeans with me after all and I wasn’t looking forward to the prospect of having to hand wash them) but once you let you of silly stuff like worrying about the mud, you embrace the experience and totally have fun with it. And I’m not trying to say this in some profound or pretentious way, it was just so much fun to get on the quad bikes and go running through the countryside!
I highly recommend it when you’re in Croatia (or anywhere you can for that matter) and for those who haven’t had the experience before, here are a few tips for the rookie quad biker:
1.) Put a jacket in the little boot thing. No matter how warm it seems, it does get a lot windier when you start moving
2.) As long as the roads are fairly okay, embrace those little puddles of water. Sure you get some mud on you but it beats swerving to avoid them
3.) If you have a GoPro, this is the time to use it (speaking of which, I have got a video this by the way so I will have this up soon)
4.) Wear a helmet, it might seem like you’re not moving ridiculously fast but it’s a lot faster than you think
5) Put the lid down on the helmet too – I learned my lesson the hard way with this one after I swallow a mouthful of flies when we first started
6.) It’s a lot easier than you might think. You can learn how to use a quad bike in minutes.
7.) try not to show off, that’s how people get hurt. Take it slow and have fun with it!
And of course, here are some of the photos from the afternoon!
