It’s been a while since I’ve had one of these kinda days in London…
London is glorious in summer time! There’s just so much more stuff to do and with the sun shining brightly, very little excuse not to to do said stuff! Even on slightly overcast days like today, the sun managed to peek through the clouds from time to time and so my friends and I decided to meet up and have a jaunt to nowhere in particular…
It’s been a while since I’ve had a free weekend in London (not that I’m complaining of course) but for months now, it seemed like every weekend we’ve had one travel plan or the other so on what seemed like a rare occasion to be in London for a weekend, we decided to make the most of the (lack of) sunshine and grab a bite to eat in Borough Market.
Borough Market is a London favourite and is always packed when it’s open (even in winter)… I literally and figuratively buy into the market and it’s focus on local farm produce, freshly cooked meals and one on one interactions with retailers that know their stuff! I always end up buying ingridients I don’t really need just because of how good it looks. Like seriously, what kind of meal am I gonna make with a couple of sweet corn, some apple, several baklavas, a bit of cheese and ground coffee? 🙂
We made a beeline for the food stalls…
And decided to go for the Boston Sausage Burger! I figured it made sense to double up on the burger. Don’t ask why, it just did! 🙂 In truth, I have very little defence for my weak excuse to cover up my greed.
Burgers in tow, we headed for the ground of Southwark Cathedral to honker down and attempt to break the burger speed-eating record!
Eventually,with the burgers having apparently disappeared into thin air. We figured we might as well check out the rest of the market. (In truth, I was just in search of dessert at this point!)
Next on the agenda, coffee and with the sun deceptive shining for a little bit initially, we decided on a change of scenery and headed off in search of a park to sleep off the impending food haze…
Luckily, the Imperial War Museum was nearby…
And then I spotted a Mr Whippy ice cream van. You can pretty much guess what happened next so I’ll just skip past that… 😉
After spending a while just chilling on the grass (the sun had come out properly by this point), we gave into our guilt and decided to head into the museum. London has so many great museums and seeing as they’re all free, it always makes sense to pop into one if you’re nearby.

We wandered through the hallways with their distractingly huge planes…
..but don’t be fooled. A visit to the Imperial War Museum is actually a rather sobering experience. Some of the exhibitions are rather jarring (as can be expected from any war museum) but it’s worth a visit. even if just as a sober reminder of how human beings need to learn to love and respect each other and celebrate our differences rather than seeing them as a weakness or flaw of some sort.
N.B.: You can’t take photos in the different exhibitions so I’ve got no other photos asides these ones from the huge entrance hallway…
That’s the thing about London – even when you’re just randomly (and aimlessly) walking around the city, there’s so much stuff to ‘distract you’ and so in a lot of ways, you don’t really need to make any plans for your afternoon. Just meet up with your friends and see where your feet take you…
