When we decided to go to Tennessee, I knew pretty much straight away that we would have to make a road trip of it.

With that, rather than stick to one city the entire time – it was decided that the trip would be a 3 city break would be just the thing (which is fairly doable seeing as we were here for about 9 days in total).

With that, we headed off to Memphis – staying at the Madison Hotel, which is usually home to an amazing rooftop bar but alas, we arrived right in the middle of renovations to the hotels and so there were no rooftop sunsets to be had here.

The drive to Memphis from Nashville is about 3 hours and so arrived just in time for lunch. We had no real big plans for this evening – just to soak up the atmosphere in Memphis (more on that later) and so off we went in search of food.

Maciel’s Taco Shop turned out to be just the spot we needed, as we settled into an unintentional Mexican feast.

Unintentional because I started off thinking “Oh, I’ll just get a fajita…but I’m pretty hungry so I’ll get a side of cheesy nachos to go with it.”. Well it turns out you get some nachos already with your food (found this out after), then I got the actual nachos I ordered and a ginormous portion of fajitas with another ginormous burrito for Lloyd.

Absolutely delicious but way more food than we’d originally anticipated! 😀 (Though I’d happily do this all over again right about now.

By the time we were done with lunch, we pretty much needed a wheelbarrow to roll us out of Maciel’s!

The one plan we had confirmed for the evening was to head to the iconic Peabody Hotel where there was a rooftop party with live music on.

The rooftop party happens every week and there’s live music, food, dancing and lots of sunset views over Memphis to be had. (It’s also pretty reasonable – I think it’s $15 to get in and $20 for VIP access – VIP includes food and a separate cordoned off area).

The Peabody is also known for its resident ducks who every day have a procession from their penthouse apartment down the lifts and walk to the fountains where they relax in the lap of duck-luxury until the evening when they head upstairs for bedtime. It’s like something out of a storybook and garners quite the crowd! 😀

We arrived just as the party was getting started (i.e. fairly early) and got ourselves some drinks to kick things off.

After spending several days running filled with lots of activities – it was quite a treat to just kick back in the sun (Memphis feels so much hotter than Nashville by the way so when the sun starts to set like it is now, it’s just perfect!) with ice-cold cocktails.

Soon enough, the music kicked off, dancing ensued and it was just absolutely brilliant!
