After our big lunch down by the seaside, I was in no shape for any exercise whatsoever and so off we went on a more of a laidback jaunt around Menorca – this time on a boat, leaving from the port of Mahon (the capital city of Menorca).
Now I realise, reading this title back that it sounds like we went on a boat and went off in search of gin but in truth, we just went on a boat around the island and then worked our way through the gins once we arrived back.
We started off with some rather fancy houses (apparently Richard Branson used to own something here back in the day) and to be honest, I don’t really remember half of the famous residents that we were told lived here – I was totally distracted by the beauty of the island (and probably in something of a food haze after lunch to be fair… actually, it was probably a lot more of the latter than I’d like to admit, my limits went right out of the window at lunch).
Sailing around the island is such a perfect way to see a different side to the island – it’s a view you’d never get on land, suffice it to say, even if you actually drove up to the coast.
Our boat also had a glass bottom (which I found out about half way through) and so we headed there to get a different view of Menorca ‘wild life’).
After what seemed like barely any time (it flew by so quickly), we were back on land but this time, headed for – you guessed it – the ‘ginery’ (which I wish was a real word but actually isn’t).
Menorca is known for making it’s own local gins and they come in many flavours, which you can try before you buy (go with your loins girded – you can work your way through quite a few gins here). For this of course – head over to Gin Xoriguer, which is popular all across the island (I’d seen and drunk this several times in different spots on the island before we even visited).
You can also go gin tasting if you want though I’m guessing after sample 7, you’ll find yourself convinced about not just how much you want gin, but how much you need it!
Next up – the city of Mahon, albeit rather gin-addled by this point and with a surprising around of gin bottles (strictly as souvenirs, of course 😉 ) than we initially thought possible! But more on that in the next post…
