After our day in Lake Como, we left our hotel in Milan in search of what would be our new home for the next week – our very own Tuscan farmhouse!
Our farmhouse was located pretty much on its own (with no neighbours so to speak) about halfway between San Miniato and San Gimignano and despite our best intentions to arrive early in the day, our drive from Milan down to Tuscany was one filled with many distractions in form of pretty little towns, villages and Florentine steaks and so we ended up arriving late in the evening.
The farmhouse by the way was everything I hoped it would be and more. I wanted a ‘real’ and somewhat rustic experience and this farm is actually a working farm. Like you arrive and meet the farmer (whose family have owned the farm for centuries) and there’s a cow shed right next to the reception and a farm shop a few minutes walk away from it. (Your place isn’t next to the cowsheds by the way – it’s like 5km away 😉 ).
*We booked it on Airbnb (Lloyd found it so he gets all the credit) – you can see the full listing here… and click here to get a discount off your booking (I think it’s £25 at the moment).
Let me show you around the place…
Like seriously, it’s such a cute place and one that’s definitely easy to feel at home in straight away!
The farm is also perfect for long countryside walks though you’ll probably end up bumping into wild deer (like we did when we arrived), wild boars (you wanna give them a wide berth) and many of the farm animals (apparently the cows here can jump fences – which I never even knew was a thing before).
Oh, and there’s a pool here too (fine – that’s not ‘classic farm’ style but I’m not complaining 😉 ).
As the sun wasn’t out, we decided to give pool time a miss and head back to the farm shop and nearby Montaione to pick up a few supplies for dinner. There was nothing for it but pasta in a tomato sauce, with a crusty Italian loaf, salad (with lots of cheese – not sure if you’re meant to have that much cheese with salad, can’t say I care – I wanted it), olive oil and butter from the farm… all with lots of prosecco!
I think it’s been a while since we’ve actually cooked while travelling. We’ve grown so used to eating out when we travel that it just felt so good to have a proper home cooked meal (with as much mozzarella as I wanted). Also, this might all be in my head but doing this made me settle in even quicker into my new Italian home – familiar routines, the smell of the pasta sauce, dinner in comfy clothes… it was everything I’d wanted and more.
The rest of that evening was spent with taking in the sunset with red wine and the wine-addled laughing that comes naturally with it. 🙂
The sun came out the next day and after breakfast, the rest of the morning was spent polishing off the remaining bottle of red wine out in the sunshine before heading over to the pool.
Like seriously, this place is every bit the Tuscan dream and had me excited for our plans over the next week.
