Our visit to Martel was rather last minute…
We’d no idea where we were initially, only that it was beautiful and that we wanted to spend more time here and so we did!
Visiting here, like any good French town (technically, a French commune) is like stepping back in time.
It’s all cute French houses, even cuter shops and places that look like they’re right out a French postcard.
The town is fairly small so if ever there was a place to ‘get lost’ in, this would be it!
We started off in the market square with a quick drink before heading off to see what Martel held in store.
Thing is, I’m so used to the idea of knowing what sights to look out for when I visit a place so wandering through this town without a clue where I was heading was something of a change, to say the least, though a rather welcome change.
*Alas, this means there’s not much I can tell you about the place… all I can do is walk you through the town and take you, via pictures, on a little tour of the town! Come with…
Partway through, we made a stopped off in a stately home-turned-hotel/B&B… Yet another random stop but one that was totally perfect for sating my curiosity about French homes.
Surely I’m not the only one who travels through different places and wonders how the homes look inside (and particularly if they match the outsides)? 🙂 😀
To be honest, travel has done very little to reduce this curiosity as there are some pretty amazing places out there and every ‘Wow!” moment I have when I step into a place just serves to make me even more curious!
It’s such a beautiful place, isn’t it?
My favourite bit though is the garden here, which comes complete with a plunge pool – just think of those summer afternoons that can be spent here. 🙂
Anyway, enough with the distraction – here’s the rest of Martel!
See what I mean about how it feels like stepping back in time? Needless to say, even if it’s just for a couple of hours, if you’re every in the Dordogne Valley, take a moment or two to explore Martel! 🙂
