On of the reasons why Bavaria in Germany is so special is without a doubt it’s natural beauty.
And I’m not talking about the kind of beauty that’s subjective (or to put it nicely “in the eye of the beholder…”😉😁), the beauty here is by all accounts absolutely breathtaking.
On our way to our next stop, it was recommended that we stopped off in Walchensee and so we did just that!
To get a better view of the area, we took the cable car up to the Herzogstand mountain (remember to bring cash here – they do not take cards here).
The view from Herzogstand is just absolutely stunning! Not just of the amazing emerald lake Walchensee but also of the surrounding towns, villages and mountains!
It’s just such an amazing picture of Germany that I honestly don’t think we’ve seen anywhere else we’ve visited in Germany.
Not too far from where the cable car drops you off is a restaurant – Berggasthaus Herzogstand, which also had pretty amazing views of the surrounding countryside and so even if you don’t plan on having a meal up here, it’s definitely worth the few minutes walk here to check it out.
The food here is traditionally German food – like the menu is only in German and we had to order in (pretty terrible) German as the staff spoke very little English but that’s what you’re here for – all things German! 😀
I’ve been obsessed with Kartoffelkloesse (German dumplings) for a few months now, enough that I recognise them on the menu straight away so I was good but Lloyd ended up ordering chicken nuggets (or a version of anyway) which took him by surprise. (*Well, he says that but I know Lloyd’s partial to chicken nuggets (especially with a side of baked beans) so I kinda feel like his plan all along was to get these chicken nuggets… 😁)
Done with lunch, we headed back for the cable car to go down to the Walchensee lake.
If we had more time though, I think I’d very much have like to have done the hike back downhill as it’s so beautiful here (plus downhill walking is soooooooo much easier than uphill 😄).
Down by the lake, what I didn’t expect was how this area had been turned to a beach.
Families were out, picnicking, swimming, sailing and generally just making the most of this beautiful German summer day!
It’s just the perfect spot to get your feet wet and take a moment to yourself before carrying on to explore even more of Germany’s absolutely stunning countryside.
