If Collonges La Rouge is France’s most beautiful village, then Rocamadour is definitely its most dramatic!
Unlike Collonges La Rouge, which turned out to be quite a surprise visit on our trip through the Dordogne Valley, Rocamadour was one I had been looking forward to from the start! Pinterest had me fawning about this village for ages before we finally got to visit.
As you can imagine, the best view of the village is not inside the village itself but instead, from one of the many viewing points in the surrounding village so a quick stop to check this out is almost mandatory before you head into the village.
Stepping into the village here feels like stepping back into time. Its windy roads lead you through quaint little streets, filled with pretty shops offering delicious food (I may have blocked out any non-food shops from my memory) and leads up to even prettier churches and alleyways.
There are a grand total of 645 people living here so its as small as it sounds. There’s not a whole lot to do here either which means you have no ‘distractions’ and your entire visit can be spent just taking in the sights and seeing the village slowly.
Whatever you do though, you’ve gotta take the stairs up to Basilique St-Sauveur and see this amazing church in all it’s glory! Oh, and you’ve gotta try Rocamadour cheese too!
I’m gonna stop yammering now and leave you with photos of the village of Rocamadour… 🙂
By the way, when you’re you should definitely check out the village of Sant Cirq La Poppie. It’s right next door to Rocamadour and is an equally beautiful French village you definitely should visit.
We didn’t have much time to visit it on this trip but as per usual, it’s another excuse to return to the Dordogne valley soon… that and the promise of more delicious French wines and cheeses.
