One of the greatest things about cities like New York is its ability to bring every type of food, from every corner of the globe right to your tingling tastebuds. Just like London, New York City has a wealth of quirky and unusual restaurants that will not only leave your tastebuds zinging but seize the rest of your senses in strange but exciting ways!
There’s a saying that its not the food you eat but the way you eat it that makes you really enjoy a delicious meal. Well, If that’s true, these unusual New York City restaurants should be crowned Queens or Kings of all eateries! Here are 9 unusual New York City restaurants that you definitely have to visit!
1.) Be a Queen of the Night
Queen Of The Night at Diamond Horseshoe is literally once of the most extravagant dinner experiences in all of NYC! Take an open mind, an empty tummy and a little dancing spirit for a night you won’t forget.
2.) Head into a chemistry lab
Apothéke is a chemistry lab of mixologists that will make your tastebuds whizz and sizzle with delight! Upon entering, you’ll be welcomed by the clinical scientists in white coats that will guide you through their medications. Once sat down, you even have the opportunity to discuss with your
server scientist the prescription you think you’ll need!
Interestingly each and every cocktail (or prescription) is made with local ingredients with the majority of its herbs and spices coming from its rooftop herb garden.
3.) Please Don’t Tell
Please Don’t Tell is one of New York’s most authentic speakeasy bars and restaurants. You’ll need a reservation to enter here so give them a call before you arrive. If they answer the phone saying the ‘wrong number’ then persist… eventually they will give in and offer you a table on the day itself (all part of the fun). Upon arrival, you’ll need to walk through the secret phone booth that grants access to this underworld of fun, frolics and unbelievably amazing cocktails!
4.) Eat in a cave
Whisk yourself away from the hustle and bustle of the city by heading into La Caverna. You’ll totally forget your even in New York once you walk through the doors. This cave-like restaurant is an elaborately created dinner experience that is perfect if you want to chillout with friends while sipping cocktails as if you’re in the Atlas Mountains of Morocco.

Head down the secret path entrance to discover a world like no other in New York. Ninja New York is a totally subversive experience which is recreated as an ancient Japanese village that is peppered with ‘real life’ ninjas that take your orders and even battle in the restaurant :-). Each delicious meal is uniquely made and follows its ethos of Japanese fusion foods… with a touch of French influence and sophistication. ;-).
6.) Head back to the 1920’s
Fancy whisking your way back to the 1920’s? Then head no further than Les Salonnieres. To be able to get into this speakeasy restaurant you’ll have to keep your eyes widely peeled for the unassuming locked door in the Lower East Side. Give a little knock and you’ll find yourself in an entirely different world, nay era! Each event is completely different and always incorporates experiences such as nude painting, pottery classes and even poker nights. Serving fresh oysters, lobster and the best cocktails in town, Les Salonnieres is my new go to place for a swinging evening in the city!
7.) Eat in a monastery
Burp Castle is a monastery themed experience like no other. Just like a monastery, voices and loud noises have to be kept to a minimum with Monks shushing patrons that do not respect its monastic values :-). Raucous pairings and murals line this bar. Just make sure you keep quiet, respect the monks and enjoy your food and drink!
