Ngong Ping Village is one place you definitely have to visit when exploring the best things to do in Hong Kong. It’s such a different scene from the mainland’s bright lights, fast cars and concrete, glass & steel towers.
To get to the village, you can either take a cable car (the Ngong Ping 360) which is an experience on its own.
It’s a see-through car and as though that wasn’t enough, it offers panoramic views all the way up to the village. The journey lasts 1 hour though there is a shorter 25-minute option.
We didn’t have time to wait for the cable car (those queues can be quite crazy) and we had just a few hours before we had to head to the airport so we flagged a taxi down and took it all the way to the village (which is really really high!).
Anyway, let’s get cracking with the things you need to do and see.
First things first, as soon as you arrive check out this tree with what appears to scroll hanging from it. You have no choice really, it’s right at the entrance.
Check out the Big Buddha in the distance…
Take a walk around the village and explore it in a lot more detail…
You are high up in the clouds here and the clouds at this stage actually covered the Big Buddha – which is actually called Tian Tan Buddha…
Finally, brace yourself for a climb up to the Big Buddha.
It seems high and indeed it is but it’s a lot easier to climb than it looks…
Look back at the village, looks quite mystical with the clouds covering it…
Take a walk around the Big Buddha…
Look out for monks…
Head off to explore more of the village on foot…
Go to the Po Lin Monastery…
Take in some of the sights while shopping for souvenirs…
We decided to get hats (see below) and Chinese opera masks (not pictured).
Those hats proved to be a challenge to pack in our luggage so I ended up wearing mine all the time while travelling to and from airports (even in London, Australia and Dubai)
Finally, we had to make our way to the airport and we bade Ngong Ping Village farewell and went to look for a taxi to take us to the airport…
Instead, we found lots of cows in the car park, eventually, a taxi did show up of course but we had cows to keep us company until it did! 🙂
